Have you ever watched your baby suddenly fling their arms wide open in their sleep — or startle so violently at the sound of a closing door that they wake up screaming?
Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering:
“Why does my baby seem so sensitive?” “Why is settling so hard for them?” “Why does something feel… off — even when I can’t explain it?”
You are not imagining it.
Sometimes what we’re witnessing in our babies isn’t “bad sleep,” a “difficult temperament,” or a phase they’ll simply outgrow. Sometimes their little nervous systems are still holding onto early survival patterns called primitive reflexes — and understanding these reflexes can completely shift the way you see your baby.
Instead of asking what’s wrong, you begin to understand what their body is communicating.
What Are Primitive Reflexes?
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that babies are born with. They’re governed by the lower regions of the brain and nervous system — the areas responsible for survival before conscious control develops.
Think of them as your baby’s built-in operating system.
These reflexes help babies:
- Move through the birth canal
- Find the breast or bottle
- Feed and swallow
- Grip and connect
- Build the foundational movement patterns that lead to rolling, crawling, and walking
You’ve probably already seen them in action:
- Rooting reflex — Stroke your baby’s cheek and they turn toward you, searching.
- Palmar grasp reflex — Touch their palm and they grip your finger with surprising strength.
- Moro reflex — A sudden sound or movement and their arms fling wide, body tenses, eyes go wide.
These reflexes are completely normal in infancy. But as your baby’s nervous system matures, they’re supposed to gradually integrate — meaning they become absorbed into more coordinated, intentional movement and emotional regulation.
Sometimes, that process gets a little stuck.
When Reflexes Don’t Fully Integrate
Birth stress, body tension, nervous system sensitivity, oral dysfunction, or an especially intense start to life can sometimes slow the integration process. When that happens, babies may continue reacting from a primitive survival state longer than expected.
This can show up as:
- Frequent night waking and difficulty settling
- Feeding difficulties or latch struggles
- Excessive startling
- Body tension or arching
- Sensory sensitivity
- Difficulty calming after stimulation
- Clinginess or emotional dysregulation
- Delayed or disorganized movement patterns
This is why so many parents feel like everything is connected — because often, it is.
The Moro Reflex: Your Baby’s Built-In Alarm System
One of the most commonly retained reflexes is the Moro reflex, also called the startle reflex.
You’ve seen it: arms flung outward, eyes wide, body stiff, expression startled — triggered by nothing more than a sound, a shadow, or a sudden movement.
In the newborn stage, this reflex is protective and completely expected. But when it remains active beyond the typical 4–6 month window, the nervous system can become stuck in a state of chronic high alert.
Imagine a car alarm that goes off at every passing breeze.
Babies with an active Moro reflex may:
- Wake easily from sleep, even during deep sleep cycles
- Startle repeatedly at sounds, lights, or movement
- Struggle with transitions — naptime, car seats, new environments
- Become overstimulated quickly and have difficulty recovering
- Seem extra clingy, tense, or inconsolable
And later in childhood, this same pattern can show up as anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or big reactions to small stressors — not because your child is “too sensitive,” but because their nervous system is working overtime to feel safe.
The Reflex Most Parents Have Never Heard Of
Before the Moro reflex even develops, there’s an earlier, more primitive reflex called the Fear Paralysis Reflex (FPR).
Where the Moro says “Danger — react!”, the Fear Paralysis Reflex says “Danger — freeze.”
Babies with an active FPR may:
- Stiffen when overwhelmed rather than cry
- Hold their breath during stress
- Become unusually still or shut down
- Withdraw instead of seeking comfort
As toddlers or older children, this can look like freezing during transitions, social anxiety, or going quiet instead of expressing big feelings — all rooted in a nervous system that learned to protect itself by becoming invisible.
This is why nervous system support matters so deeply. Babies aren’t just learning milestones. They’re learning what safety feels like.
How Primitive Reflexes Affect More Than Movement
Other reflexes quietly influence development in ways most parents never realize:
- ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) — Can affect hand-eye coordination and the ability to cross the body’s midline, which matters for reading, writing, and catching a ball.
- STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) — Can impact posture, crawling quality, and the ability to sit still.
- TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex) — Can influence muscle tone, balance, and even tummy time tolerance.
- Feeding reflexes (rooting and sucking) — Can directly impact latch comfort, feeding efficiency, and oral motor development.
This is why a baby who struggles with sleep may also struggle with feeding, body tension, and emotional regulation. Their nervous system isn’t working in isolated compartments — it’s one beautifully connected system.
What If Your Baby Isn’t “Difficult” — Just Dysregulated?
This is the reframe that changes everything.
Instead of asking: “Why is my baby so hard?”
You begin asking: “What is their nervous system trying to tell me?”
Babies don’t need us to push them through discomfort or rush them toward milestones. They need safety, co-regulation, and gentle opportunities for their nervous system to integrate and settle.
You don’t need to become an expert to start noticing patterns. Simply begin observing:
- Does your baby startle easily or repeatedly?
- Can they calm after stress, or does it take a very long time?
- Are their hands often tightly clenched?
- Do they seem uncomfortable on their back?
- Is tummy time frustrating or disorganized?
- Do transitions feel enormous to them?
These aren’t red flags. They’re clues. And clues lead to understanding.
Trust What You’re Noticing
If you’ve had a quiet sense that your baby is more sensitive, more tense, or needing something beyond the usual advice — trust that feeling.
You know your baby.
Understanding primitive reflexes won’t give you all the answers, but it can help you make sense of behaviors that once felt confusing or overwhelming. Not from a place of fear — but from a place of compassion, curiosity, and connection.
Your baby isn’t broken. Their body may simply be asking for a little more support, a little more time, and a nervous system that feels truly safe.
