The holidays are supposed to feel magical. But when you’re in the thick of life with a baby, they can also feel heavy, loud, and exhausting.
There’s the pressure to travel, to show up, to make memories—all while you’re trying to keep your little one comfortable and maybe, just maybe, wash your hair.
And if your baby has been fussier than usual, harder to settle, or struggling with sleep and feeding, you might find yourself asking: is this just normal? Or is something else going on?
If your gut is whispering that your baby feels uncomfortable in their body, here’s what I want you to know: you’re not imagining it.
Babies Hold Tension Too
When people first hear about baby bodywork, it can sound intimidating—or even indulgent. But at its core, bodywork is simply gentle, hands-on support that helps your baby’s body release tension and find its way back to balance. This can include craniosacral therapy, pediatric osteopathy, or gentle chiropractic care. All of these approaches work with your baby’s nervous system, not against it.
Here’s the part that often gets overlooked: birth is a full-body experience—for your baby, not just for you.
Whether your birth involved Pitocin, an epidural, forceps or vacuum extraction, manual turning, an unusually fast labor, a prolonged one, or a cesarean section—each of these experiences can leave behind patterns of tension in your baby’s body. That doesn’t mean anything went wrong. These interventions save lives, and they matter deeply. But sometimes, the tightness they create doesn’t fully release on its own.
Instead, it shows up in ways you might already be noticing: trouble feeding or latching on one side, a strong preference to look in only one direction, arching or stiffness, discomfort lying flat, resistance to tummy time or the car seat, or frequent fussiness with no clear cause.
Your baby isn’t “difficult.” Their body may simply be asking for support.
What Baby Bodywork Actually Looks Like
If you’re picturing anything forceful or uncomfortable, you can take a breath. Bodywork for babies is incredibly gentle—often so subtle that it looks like I’m simply holding your child. But beneath that stillness, there’s a quiet dialogue happening between my hands and your baby’s body. I’m listening for where tension lives, and gently inviting it to soften.
When that release happens, we’re not just addressing muscles or joints. We’re supporting the nervous system at a deeper level.
Your baby’s body is wrapped in fascia—a network of connective tissue that links everything together. When fascia becomes tight or compressed, often as a result of birth, it can ripple outward and affect feeding, movement, digestion, sleep, and even emotional regulation. Gentle bodywork helps calm the vagus nerve, which is the nervous system’s primary pathway for feelings of safety, healthy digestion, and rest.
That’s why parents often start to notice a shift after sessions: deeper breathing, easier feeds, longer or more settled sleep, and a baby who simply seems more at ease in their own skin. This isn’t magic. It’s regulation.
This Isn’t Only for “Struggling” Babies
Bodywork can be a powerful support for babies dealing with reflux, tongue ties, sleep challenges, or residual birth tension. But it’s also a beautiful form of preventative care.
We don’t wait for cavities to visit the dentist, and we don’t wait for injuries to get a massage. In the same way, regular bodywork can help babies stay balanced as they grow—through rolling, crawling, and all the developmental leaps that come with it. Some of the most peaceful babies I work with aren’t coming in because something is wrong. Their parents simply want to support ease and healthy nervous system function as their child develops.
Trust the Feeling That Something Could Be Better
One of the most common things parents tell me is this: “I knew something was off, but everyone kept telling me it was normal.”
Some fussiness is normal—that’s true. But if your intuition is nudging you to look deeper, that feeling deserves to be honored.
This is why, especially during the holiday season, I want to suggest a different kind of gift. Not another toy. Not another outfit. But the gift of ease.
Whether that looks like a bodywork session for your baby, a gift certificate for a new parent in your life, or simply taking the time to understand how your baby’s body and nervous system work together—ease is one of the most meaningful things you can offer.

In Episode 52 of the Mothering From Within podcast, I go much deeper into how birth impacts the baby’s body, why tension often shows up as feeding or sleep struggles, and how bodywork supports regulation for both baby and mama. I also share details about my free webinar, The Rooted in Regulation Map, where I walk through how the body, brain, feeding, sleep, and nervous system are all connected—and why understanding these connections changes everything.

The best gift you can give isn’t perfection. It’s presence. It’s listening to your intuition. And sometimes, it’s simply helping your baby’s body feel safe enough to truly relax.
When your baby finds ease… your whole body does too. 💜
