How To Run Mom and Baby Classes As A Pediatric Therapist

Are you wondering how to run mom and baby classes? Perhaps you are dreaming about them (and have been for a while), but just haven’t taken the plunge! I have been there! The vision, the planning, then the overwhelm. Wondering how to put all your knowledge as a pediatric therapist into a class that doesn’t overwhelm mamas – ha!

Read on to learn about the why of my popular, sold-out mom and baby classes called Babies @ Play! Stick with me and get some cool insights into how to make this easier (aka, learn from my mistakes). Read to the end to stay tuned to how I can help you run your own mom and baby classes. How to get them up, running, and filled as well!

Why should you run mom and baby classes?

Running mom and baby classes as a pediatric therapist or post-natal professional is definitely something to consider. Why? Because every mama deserves less overwhelm and more confidence in their baby’s development. They also often have a ton of questions about sleep, reflux, and all the other ‘mama pain points’, as I like to call them. Pediatric therapists and post-natal professionals are the exact right fit for teaching this! My passion for teaching about infant development and supporting all those ‘mama pain points’ was inspired by my own experiences as a Mama.

And I’ll bet this is the case for you too!

As a result, my small business Kaili Ets Family Wellness was born. It was initially called Play & Bloom Therapy, but that is another story for another day.

Why did I start my Babies @ Play mom & baby play group focused on infant development?

When my first-born, Kristjan, was born, I thought I had a head start on the whole motherhood thing. I had 8 years of experience as a pediatric occupational therapist (I mean, come on…. infant/child development all the way). And I also had an entire childhood spent babysitting, tutoring, and camp counselling.

Truth-be-told though, motherhood was one heck of a ride for me initially and I felt ALL the feelings and had ALL the emotions. I remember ping-ponging between this feeling of “I’ve got this”, quickly followed by “what the heck am I doing”.  Overwhelm, stress, exhaustion, confusion….. I felt it all.

And then I had a thought…. If I felt all of this (and I had the experience and knowledge about babies and kids), then what the heck must other mamas be feeling (many of whom have never even held a baby before having their own).

I decided then and there that my mission was to help mamas and babies reduce the overwhelm of motherhood, even in a small way! It really does take a village!

Turned My Dream Of Running Mom and Baby Classes Into a Reality

I decided to take my dream of running mom and baby classes and turned it into a reality. And so my Babies @ Play classes were born.  Finally a mom and baby class that was focused on infant development, something that at the time, 7 years ago, was definitely NOT mainstream.

I just love running these classes! Cuddling the babies and helping them move brings me so much joy. But seeing the relief on mamas’ faces when their worry and overwhelm starts to melt away as I talk about a concept or teach a quick tip is the real kicker for me!

Over the past 7 years I have not only run these classes more than 50+ times. I can proudly say that, after a few hiccups in the road and trial and error, they have been sold out almost every time!

Why should you run your own mom and baby classes?

Adding in mommy & me group classes to your existing business (or start a side business of your own) is a brilliant idea! Why?

Being a mother can be so isolating as it is, with only your little baby to talk to day in and day out.  Since COVID, that isolation has just increased. The need for connection (and getting out of the house) is even greater for humans in general, but especially for mamas.  This building of community and making new mama friends is one of the most important perks of running mom and baby groups.

Yes, of course you want to teach mamas all about the importance of tummy time, how to encourage rolling, and help ease their fears around intro to solids. But ultimately, what they seek is the connection and the friendships that are made during class.  They need to hear that others are struggling like they are, or have gone through a similar phase with their babies and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Help Mamas Find Their Village of Support

In addition to this building of community for the mamas, mommy & me classes are also supporting the bonding between mom and baby.  These Babies @ Play classes provide a relaxed and supportive environment for parent and baby pairs. A place they can explore movement, music, and sensory play. These classes provide an important opportunity for social interaction, helping babies to develop essential communication skills through songs and imitation play.

As you can see, mom & baby classes are so important, and so needed. But where the real magic comes in is through the extra support and knowledge you bring as a postnatal, pediatric, developmental professional. Bam!

In addition to teaching mamas about infant development, I have also added in holistic sleep support. Helping families find the true cause (if there is one) of why a baby may be waking a lot at night, or why they can’t settle without constant support and touch.  My approach to sleep, and really everything related to parenting is developmentally driven and encourages responsive parenting with a huge focus on the attachment and bonding between parent and child.

And a big goal of mine  is to help mamas trust their instincts. That is even the underlying theme in my new book, Mothering From Within: Find clarity, ease, and trust in your motherhood journey, but more on that later.
