Does Your Baby Have Sensory Processing Differences?

Does your baby resist cuddling, or even pull away or arch away from you when held or during feeding?

Do they become upset or overly excited in noisy, bustling settings (ie. grocery store or restaurant)?
Or even hold their hands over their ears?

Is your baby/child generally fussy, irritable or seem unhappy and/or get distresses without any apparent reason?
Are they difficult to calm?

Do they have difficulty settling to sleep, wake up frequently and/or nurse for hours at night
(beyond typical age-appropriate wakings)?

Do they take longer than 30-minutes to fall asleep, even after calming techniques and bedtime routines
have been implemented?

Activity level that is unusually high or unusually low?

Are haircuts, cutting nails, bath time and/or bed time challenging?

Does your child struggle with clothes being itchy, tight, uncomfortable or do they feel
that clothing tags are bothersome?

Do they avoid tastes, smells, or textures normally tolerated by children that age?

As parents we are somewhat prepared for the sleep exhaustion that comes along with a newborn, and the desire to want the best for our child and their development, but what we struggle with is when something just feels a bit off.

While many of the above behaviours are somewhat typical of normal infant/child development, they might also be signs that your child has some sensory processing differences.

If these things are affecting your child's functioning (or your daily routine as a family), causing stress, worry or concern, then I can help!

What Is Sensory Processing?

Everything we learn from our environment comes into our body (and brain) through our senses.
Sensory processing is the ability of the nervous system to register input from our senses, interpret the information, and forma response (either a motor response, language, cognition, etc).

We have 8 senses – tactile (touch), visual (vision), auditory (hearing), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), vestibular (movement/balance), proprioception (body awareness/body position), and interoception (internal organs, body rhythms such as hunger/thirst, sleep cycles, bowel/bladder, etc).

Individuals need to be able to receive sensory messages & organize the information in order to form an appropriate behavioural or physical response.  Babies & children who have trouble processing sensory information may exhibit problems with feeding, sleeping, meeting developmental milestones and other motor skills, behaviour, academic skills, organizational skills, attention span, & so much more, making it difficult to function at home and/or at daycare/school.

What Are Primitive Reflexes?

Reflexes are movements that occur which are beyond our conscious control (they are controlled by the brain stem). There are two types of reflexes – infant (or primitive) reflexes and postural reflexes. These reflexes provide a foundation for all later functioning, and therefore are a very important part of human development.

Primitive reflexes are reflexes that develop before or shortly after birth, within the first year, to equip baby with automatic movements, which will help with his/her survival in the first few weeks of life.  Babies are meant ‘integrate’ (or get rid of, move past) these so that we can consciously control our movements.

Postural reflexes help us with our posture, movement and body stability.  These reflexes provide the framework for other parts of the nervous system to function effectively.

Sometimes reflexes fail to develop or fail to be “integrated” (meaning the reflex is still active) which could be related to heredity (ie, genetic conditions, developmental delays, etc), disease, lack of movement experiences or not enough of these experiences as a baby, physical or psychological trauma, toxicity, and/or premature babies and those delivered by C-section.

If infant (primitive) reflexes are still active (ie. ‘not integrated’), there is evidence that the nervous system is immature and a number of things could be affected in terms of the child’s functioning and/or behaviour.
Are you looking for answers to improve your baby’s daily functioning?

Invest in Better Sensory Processing & Reflex Integration

What will life look like for your family when you help your child from the inside out?

The answer is different for each family that I work with. But I do know the following:

Improved sensory processing makes it easier to function and makes home life easier.

Better understanding of what is going on with your baby/child decreases the impact of stress and overwhelm.

Babies are better able to play and develop when they have good sensory processing.

It is easier to make memories and be joyful when everyone is calm and grounded, knowing where their body is in space.

In other words, investing in your baby/child's functioning is an investment in your family’s wellness. The early years of parenting are not only a challenge but also exceptionally precious.

Be able to enjoy these special family moments — big and small.

I offer a variety of packages to meet each family’s unique needs. We can figure out how to promote improved your baby/child's sensory processing —
together.
Don't forget ...
You ARE a great parent and you WILL find the answers for your unique child.
And you will eventually understand your child and be able to help them settle or regulate.

In the meantime, I will help provide resources and strategies for your sensory processing questions.

In an easy to understand way that you will be able to implement into your family routine.

Sensory Processing 101 Course
$97 USD

Just want some more information, without the support?

Here is my digital course to give you the basics. This course will give you an introduction to sensory processing & primitive reflexes, how they develop, and why they are important for us to know about for our babies and kids....and of course, what to do about it!

If your child is behind in development, do not immediately jump to the conclusion that he will have problems;
instead, provide him with opportunities to develop his sensory integrative processes.
It is important not to push the child into doing things he is not ready to do;
rather, give him the opportunity and encouragement to do things his brain can handle.
